Australian Glow-worms - Managing an Important Biological Resource
نویسنده
چکیده
Australian glow-worms are a unique resource for tourism in Australia and New Zealand, yet in Australia little information is available on the species present and their relative distributions. An understanding of Australia’s biologically distinct species will indicate the need for specific populations to have strategic management plans put in place for their future protection. To get to this stage, three basic questions must be answered: • Where are glow-worms found in Australia? • What species are they? • What likely threats can potentially impact on these colonies? This information is imperative for underpinning management decisions for the future protection of glow-worm populations in Australia. During this study, knowledge of glow-worm distribution in Australia has been largely increased to now include far north Queensland and many new sites through New South Wales and Victoria. Glow-worm populations were found in fragmented rainforest habitat and isolated wet cave systems. Molecular, reproductive and morphological findings indicate strong evidence for allopatric speciation (speciation due to geographic separation) between colonies and suggest up to six new species are present within Australia. Several colonies are noted for their small geographic range and therefore an increased need for protection.

Glow-worms are bioluminescent fly larvae (Order Diptera, genus Arachnocampa) found only in Australia and New Zealand. Their core habitat is rainforest gullies and wet caves. Eight species are present in Australia; five of them have been recently described. The geographic distribution of species in Australia encompasses the montane regions of the eastern Australian coastline from the Wet Tropics...

The growing complexity of real-world problems has motivated computer scientists to search for efficient problem-solving methods. Evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence meta-heuristics are outstanding examples that nature has been an unending source of inspiration. Resource users require the capacity to cope and adapt to climate changes affecting resource condition if they, and their industries, are to remain viable. Understanding individual-scale responses to a changing climate will be an important component of designing well-targeted, broad-scale strategies and policies. Because of the interdependencies between people and ecosystems, understanding and s...

This paper analyses the versatility of the Dependency Network Diagram (DND) method for modelling inter-organisational IS collaborations from a resource dependence perspective. Originally developed to facilitate the designing and optimising of structures, work processes, and supporting IT; the DND method shows signs of a potential broader usage toward managing such collaborations. Deploying a ca...
